Patients at Kai Orthodontics can feel confident they are receiving the best in orthodontic health care. Our goal is to provide the most up-to-date technology and techniques using the best equipment possible. We are devoted to continuing education and further our learning through reading, attending conferences and continuing education courses. One of those conferences includes the 2012 AAO Annual Session, where Dr. Lisa Kai will head in a couple of weeks. Dr. Kai, Sr. will be covering the San Jose office and Dr. Marcus will be in the Campbell office while Dr. Lisa is away, so the practice will still be running. Dr. Lisa is looking forward to learning about the newest technology in orthodontics and attending as many continuing education lectures about orthodontic treatment as she can. Upon returning back the practice she hopes to implement all that she has learned at the conference.

The AAO Annual Session is an always-educational event that is also one of the largest orthodontic conventions in the world. It’s also a time for Dr. Lisa to consult with dental experts and orthodontists from around the country and stay up-to-date on all the latest technologies and orthodontic treatment options available. This, of course, allows our team at Kai Orthodontics to give you, our phenomenal patients, the best treatment experience possible.

Isn’t it nice to know you have a complete dental experts at Kai Orthodontics taking care of your perfecting your smile?

Great question! Braces were originally considered to be best appropriate for teens. But these days, kids as old as seven are beginning their orthodontic treatment. Because preadolescent kids are typically not self-conscious, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists suggest it could be a good idea to start early.

Experts, however, say it depends on the treatment required. Some children who get braces at an early age end up in a second phase of treatment, and end up having braces well into their teenage years despite starting young.

Most orthodontic treatment begins between ages nine and 14, and the folks at AAO estimate most orthodontic treatment lasts from one to three years, with two years being the average. It’s important, however, that children be screened no later than age seven for Drs. Kenneth, Marcus and Lisa Kai to assess what the best age for treatment is.

We hope this helps! Please give us a call if you have any questions about your child’s treatment at Kai Orthodontics!

This week, the Doctors thought they’d answer a few questions about technology and how it shapes our offices.

As technology becomes more advanced, how has your role as an orthodontist changed?

Our role as orthodontists changes, as needed, to keep up with the latest technology and techniques. This is something that we are continually aware of and do our best to stay updated and informed. We do this by attending various continuing education (CE) courses and lectures.

How have your social networks and modern technology transformed the way you communicate with patients?

Through our social networks, we communicate important orthodontic topics/subjects, any updates or changes within our practices (our San Jose office remodel, new team members, etc), any continuing education (CE) courses that our doctors attend, or Dr. Kai’s foreign lectures. Modern technology has allowed the ease of email to communicate with our patients very easily.

What do you make of networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter, in reference to their role in doctor-patient or doctor-colleague relationships?

The more that we use Facebook and Twitter, the more we are enjoying it to inform our patients and keeping them engaged with current events of our practice and dental/orthodontic facts.

Is there a particular network or communication platform you enjoy the most?

We enjoy using them all! We would like to begin using Twitter and Youtube more though.

The fact is, every hour of every day in the U.S., someone dies of oral cancer, which is the sixth-most common diagnosed form of the disease. The five-year survival rate is only 50 percent, and oral cancer is one of the few cancers whose survival rate has not improved. Since April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we would like to take this opportunity to remind all of our patients about the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene while you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Your dentist is specifically trained to diagnose, treat, and prevent oral health problems. Please let us now if you have any questions about your oral health during your next adjustment appointment. Take care of your teeth!

Orthodontic treatment for adults is becoming more and more common. In fact, the number of adults getting braces has actually climbed 24 percent since 1996! More adults than ever are realizing that orthodontic treatment is not just for kids, and can help improve the aesthetics and health of a smile of any age! In society where appearance matters and can help make the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing wisely to invest in orthodontic treatment.

Some of the most common reasons our adult patients come to us considering orthodontic treatment include:

· Teeth that are crowded or spaced apart, sometimes as a result of tooth decay or gum disease

· Pain or pressure from crooked teeth or a misaligned jaw

· A bad bite or malocclusion, causing teeth to fit together incorrectly

Most of all though, adult patients come to our office seeking a healthier mouth and a more confident smile! Orthodontic treatment at our office can be successful at any age, and adults especially can appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.

As an adult patient, we recognize that you have different needs than our younger patients, and we will work with you to ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment and that your needs are met with understanding and respect from us.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, we would love to have you visit for a consultation. We understand you have a busy schedule, and will work with you to find a time that is convenient for you. Please visit our website or give our office a call to schedule your appointment today!

This week, Dr. Marcus Kai decided to answer some of the most frequently-asked questions we hear at our office.

Do you take the time to explain options to your patients, and what each procedure entails?

Yes, we believe that informing and educating our patients is very important for them. We start this from the very beginning, at the initial examination. We believe that It is not only important for the patient’s own knowledge, but we also believe that when patients are aware of what is going on with their treatment, it keeps them engaged and motivated (good oral hygiene, compliance with elastics, wearing retainers, wearing aligners, etc.).

Do you partner with your patient’s other dental professionals to make sure they receive superior treatment?

Yes, we believe it is very important for all of our patients’ dental health to remain in close communication with their general dentist or other dental specialists that are involved with their treatment. For their general dentist, we make sure that they are following-up with their regular check-up exams/recalls and cleanings. For an example, we like to coordinate with their dentist’s office to have arch wires removed before the patients have their teeth cleaned. If other dental specialists (periodontist, oral surgeon, pediatric dentist, etc) are involved, we believe that working closely together and maintaining good communication is the best for their dental treatment.

Do you use state-of-the-art technology to make procedures more efficient and cause less discomfort?

Yes, both of our offices are all-digital offices. We attempt to be as “paperless” as possible. We do not have physical charts for our patients. Everything is stored on our secure server and the chart can be pulled chair-side. Our Campbell office has the latest technology in digital x-ray machines to provide very clear and lower radiation (when compared to film x-rays) x-rays.

Do you offer extras like wireless Internet access, coffee or snacks?

Yes, in both offices we provide wireless internet access to our patients and parents of patients.

Do you do anything that you feel sets you apart from other doctors in the area?

I feel that one thing that sets our practice apart is that we are truly a family practice. All three doctors (Drs. Kai, Marcus, and Lisa = father, son, and daughter) are constantly discussing our patients cases to make sure that their cases are being treated as efficiently as possible. It is like our own mini study club.

Contact our Campbell or San Jose, CA orthodontic office to schedule your complimentary consultation with our friendly doctors and staff. Learn about all your treatment options and let us help you decide which one is right for you. Call today!

It would be ideal if patients could brush and floss after every time they ate and drank anything other than water. If they do not have access to a toothbrush and floss then rinsing their mouth well with water could help improve their hygiene. Using a proxy brush (see above photo) underneath the archwires, in between each bracket, helps improve hygiene tremendously. Patients should add this to their daily oral hygiene regimen.
